Largest High School in Caddo’s History

At the end of the third month of school this year Caddo High School had an enrollment of 138 pupils. This is the largest high school enrollment in the history of the school. The total enrollment for the year will probably reach a total of 150 pupils. Last year at the end of the third month a total of 121 pupils had enrolled. That enrollment was the largest high school enrollment up to that time, but this year’s enrollment surpasses that by 17 pupils.

The steadily increasing high school enrollment is due to the steadily increasing number of transferred pupils from the rural schools. The school patrons in these districts are more and more appreciative of the training that is given in the Caddo schools. The Caddo teachers for their part are doing all in their power to give the best instruction possible. The teachers appreciate the splendid enrollment.

The enrollment in the grades is somewhat less than a year ago, there being a total of 261 enrolled at the end of the third school month as opposed to 285 for the same period last year.

It is believed, however, that total enrollment in the grades will be as great as that of last year. There has been a noticeable gain during the first half of the fourth month, which gives grounds for such a conclusion.

Styron’s Father Dies

At the hospital in Dallas at 9 o’clock Sunday morning, Mr. Styron, father of our townsman, H. T. Styron, died. The remains were taken to his home at Cleburne, where the funeral was held Monday afternoon.

Mr. Styron was known to a few Caddo people, having visited his son here several times. He was a splendid type of old Southern gentleman, and numbered his friends by all who knew him. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, and had been one of its officers many years.

To his son in Caddo many expressions of regret have been extended. H. T. Styron and wife and children went from here to attend the funeral, as did James Styron.

Yesterday

I went downtown to get the mail yesterday and noticed that the mums are blooming in the flowerbed next to the theater. Thought you might like to take a look.

New Year Greeting

The Herald extends to its readers and friends heartiest wishes for their success and happiness during 1921.

We thank you for your business and consideration in the past, and while making mistakes in the past, hope to make less in the future. The uniform kindness of our patrons, coupled with their public spirit and generous impulses has made possible whatever success The Herald has achieved during the twenty-seven years of its existence.

The Herald is by far the oldest institution in Caddo, except the post office. This issue completes its 27^th year and under its present management it has been run 20 years, so we are by no means a newcomer to Caddo. In that time we have seen Caddo grow from a small village to a sizable town. Then we had only four small brick buildings, compared with the forty now. We had one bank, a few mercantile stores, etc., narrow, unworked streets, only wells for water, no sewers, no school buildings, and small churches.

When one contemplates the differences in the town that twenty-two years make we can but feel that Caddo has grown considerably. With this growth and prosperity The Herald has kept pace, and will continue to keep pace with the town. As conditions warrant it new improvements will be made, due regard having to be had however for income meeting expenses.

The growth and benefits of the town, however, are not the results of any one man’s work nor of a group of men. It is the result of determined pioneers, who overcame obstacles that Caddo might become a city worth living in.

In Memory of Little Earline Morgan

She was the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. R. M. Morgan.

Little Earline died December 10, 1920; aged three years and one month.

All who knew her loved her dearly; she made many friends what few years she was with us.

Oh, how we miss that precious little one when we enter the home, though Jesus knew best. Our darling is at rest- she has just paid the debt we all have to pay.

I say to all who knew her if we see little Earline we must be ready when Jesus calls for us. The little one is just watching and waiting for all.

Another little one has gone to dwell with him who gave, another darling little one is sheltered in the grave; God needed one more angel child amid his shining band, and He bent with smile and clasped our darling’s hand.

Gone! Gone! Our little one is gone! Oh, canst must be, that she will never more sit smiling on our knee? No more at evening tide her pattering footsteps fall, no more we see her among the flowers- the fairest of them all.

Though our darling is among the ever green flowers, it seems to me I can see her wave her little hands and say: “Come this way loved ones, and weep not for me, for I am waiting in Heaven for thee.” Her Aunt

 

Roach Baby Dies

Last Thursday afternoon the two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Roach died after an illness of but a few days. The funeral was held Friday from the family home and the remains were buried in Caddo Cemetery.

The many friends of this young couple will greatly sympathize with them in the loss of their firstborn.

Acts of the Seventh Legislature

House Bill No. 398

An act to repeal Section 1857, 1858, and 1859 Chapter 21 Article 11, abolishing terms of county court of Caddo and Bennington, Oklahoma, in Bryan county; and declaring an emergency.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE SATE OF OKLHOMA:

Terms Abolished.

Section 1. The terms of the County Court at Caddo and Bennington, in Bryan county, Oklahoma, are hereby abolished; and Sections 1857, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, and 1862, of Chapter 21, Article 11, of the Revised Laws of 1910, establishing such terms of the County court at such towns are hereby repealed.

Transfer of Records.

Section 2. The county Commissioners of Bryan County are hereby authorized and directed and it is hereby made their duty to take charge of all books, records, files, papers, documents and all fixtures of the said County Court at Caddo and Bennington and remove the same to the county seat at Durant and place same in such offices having custody of like records.

Disposition of Pending Causes.

Section 3. All causes of action pending or unsatisfied in said County Courts at Caddo and Bennington at the time of such transfer as provided for in Section 2 hereof shall be passed upon and determined in the County Court at the county seat in the same manner and with the same force and effect as if said cause had been originally filed in the County Court at the county seat. The County Court at the county seat at Durant is given jurisdiction to try, hear, and determine all such causes of action so transferred herin (sic) to the county seats and to do all things necessary and proper to finally determine all such causes of action.

Emergency.

Section 4. It being immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health, and safety, an emergency is hereby declared to exist by reason whereof this act shall take effect and be in full force from and after its passage and approval.

Approved February 27, 1919.

 

Yesterday

My husband and I ate lunch at the Caddo Cafe and had the pulled pork plate. Shellie Parker certainly knows how to serve up some delicious BBQ! Stop by when you are in town!

While we were downtown I took a few photos of the buffalo flower bed. It is enjoying the rain!

Gas Lines Completed

Be Turned on Friday

With the completion of gas lines Caddo takes on a new spirit of progress. Our people will be served with a needed convenience. Much money has already been spent in building the lines. Business has been better all around. Now comes the buying and installation of appliances. This means spending more money and when money is in circulation, times are bound to be better. It is when people are idle that they are grouchy.

The Herald commends the Gas Company to the people, for this company wants to see the town grow, wants their business to grow, and the experience of other towns that have put in gas justifies the hope that the relations between company and consumers will be pleasant and mutually profitable.

With a bountiful and cheap fuel there is reason to hope that industries may come to Caddo where living conditions are the best and where costs are not so high. Lots and property may be obtained here much more cheaply than in the larger cities and yet have every advantage. We have the hard surfaced roads, graveled streets, waterworks, sewers and electric lights- no city has more conveniences now than Caddo. So let us take a new lease on life. Let us endeavor to build our town rather than seek ways to get hence.

Business and manufacturing opportunities are as good here as anywhere if we but think so. Crops are flourishing, soon will be cotton planting time. We can put in nice gardens with good things to eat and not depend on the stuff raise elsewhere for our foods.

The following letter from the Gas Company is indicative of the spirit of the company:

Editor, Herald:

I am informed by the operating department that gas will be tuned on in Caddo sometime during the close of next week, and I sincerely hope the celebration that you have planned in connection with this event will mark the beginning of still further progress for your town. Yours very truly, William C. Grant, Advertising Manager

The terms of the franchise have been published already, so that the folks can understand fully just what is to be charged. One item that is likely to be overlooked is gas will not be turned into residences or stores until there is an appliance to use it. It would be of no use to turn gas into a home where there was nothing with which to burn gas.

 

Civic Club Anniversary

Club Celebrated Its 21^st Anniversary

The Woman’s Club celebrated its twenty-first anniversary the 17^th of February, with a reception complimenting the members of the Civic Club and Thursday Music Club, at the beautiful home of Mrs. S. W. Maytubby, decorated for the occasion. 

Miss Maytubby presided over the guest book, and a splendid collection of birthday presents- books- were donated to the library.

The opening number in the program “The Juggler”, Mrs. Cossart at the piano, Miss Virgie Richie, violinist, was very remarkable, displaying rare talent and technique; as an encore they gave “The Souvenir”.

Mrs. Hogan, in a very able manner, gave a history of the Woman’s Club Library, extending an invitation to everyone in the town to avail themselves of the opportunities to read those books, and of her willingness to issue those books at any time.

“Schubert’s Serende” was given in a most artistic manner by Miss Maytubby; as an encore “Richninoff’s Prelude” in C Minor.

Mrs. Carraway gave a reading in her most charming way, that was enjoyed very much.

Mrs. Bilbo gave a history of the Club work of Oklahoma and Caddo, with the ease and fluency of one who knew and understood her subject, being the only active member at the time of organization that works with the Club at present. Mrs. J. B. Lyle was elected honorary member at the time of organization and is still with us.

The Woman’s Club history and Oklahoma history are closely interwoven. Due credit was given pioneer women workers who naturally longed for companionship in intellectual and spiritual uplift and rejoicing in smaller communities, where the need of all people so inclined, was felt, and needed public sentiment was not with them. Among the most efficient and capable pioneer workers, great credit was given to Mrs. Edward Walters. In fact, the benefits that have come to this town through the Club Women is largely due to her efforts; and our greatest pleasure would be having her visit the Woman’s Club here if her health would only permit. Mrs. Bilbo pointed to the future. How since the way had been paved to broader fields, it was due those pioneers that even greater things could be done- stressing the point that the Club Women co-operate in building a Tribute House to our soldiers who served in the late war from our precinct, using it as a community house or social center.

The younger members of the Club Woman’s Homes gave drills and pantomimes of Mother Goose stories which were enjoyed very much.

Misses McClure followed with piano numbers and readings that were appreciated very much.

After singing “Auld Lang Syne” all were invited to the dining room, which was beautifully decorated; in the center of the table was a  large birthday cake with twenty-one candles burning brightly. Mrs. Clower and Mrs. Nail presided over his part of the club entertainment. The most alluring and attractive after all.

All present declared they had spent  a most pleasant afternoon.
