Mrs. S. W. Maytubby Buried Here Monday

Mrs. Sam W. Maytubby died last Saturday at her home in Oklahoma City, after a long illness. The remains were brought to Caddo and buried in Caddo Cemetery, Monday afternoon, the funeral being held at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. E. Hotchkin.

Mrs. Maytubby lived many years in Caddo. She raised her fine family of children here, and was one of the best loved old timers. They moved away some seven years ago but their friends here always remembered them with kindness.

Deceased is survived by her husband, Sam Maytubby, Jr., Floyd Maytubby, Mrs. Clarence Dodd, Mrs. Earl Trowsdale and Mrs. Price Townsend.

Many other relatives were present at the funeral. And a large number of friends gathered to show their esteem.

Clarence Tisdale

Clarence Tisdale, 17, Was Killed Saturday

Saturday night between 11:30 and midnight, Clarence Tisdale, 17 years old, was instantly killed in a fight which occurred at the home of Jake Rice about a mile north of town. Mr. Rice was taken to jail in Durant where he was held for investigation.

Tisdale, with two companions, had gone to the Rice home and became engaged with him in an argument over a hat and in the scrap that followed Tisdale was alleged to have been killed by two blows by an iron rod, one over the heart and the other across the back. The blow across the chest was alleged to have been the death blow. After the striking of the blow, Tisdale ran a few steps and died instantly.

Rice waived preliminary hearing set here and is held in jail bound to district court for trial.

Young Tisdale was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ade Tisdale of Atoka and had been here since the first of this year working at various jobs.

It is altogether a very regrettable affair and until further investigation is made no action has been taken against Rice.

Deceased was buried Sunday afternoon in the Caddo cemetery with the funeral held at the Baptist church with Rev. G. A. Gurley in charge.

A good rain at last, Bill Murray elected, and President Hoover offering drought relief: what do you know about that for the farmer.  

My opinion is that all the relief the farmer will get is what he digs out from under a few tons of free advice graciously given by the drought relieve committee. If anyone gets a lift they will have to accept it as charity from the Red Cross and who is it that will accept it that way?

C.W. Banta came home Saturday from Wewoka where he had been for a week. He reports hard times and bad crops all the way up there.

With the election over and a good rain, everybody is too busy to give us any news; we note with pleasure that several of our neighbors are still getting good cream checks and are wearing a smile. Some few have become dishearted because cattle are down and are going out of business. We can’t see the logic in that for everything else is down too, so why make a change when you can’t better yourself?

I see they are still howling trade at home; if they will get it in their bean that it is necessary for them to take their own advice and do some trading at home themselves, it will enable the farmers to do more trading at home. When the farmer raises anything to sell, the first thing the merchant does is to hammer every ounce of profit out of the thing or else buy from the wholesale house at much higher prices; why not lets all pull together and keep our money at home? I will, if you will. What you say?

Abb and Miss Maud Henninger, W.R. Snow, and family, Miss Bertha Lashly, and the Brammer family have been attending the meeting at Mr. Holman’s.

The school at Liberty is doing well this summer; we are real proud of the interest manifested and it looks now like we might have a high school at Liberty yet.

Greeting 1931

Not because it is custom, but because we feel it, The Herald in this manner feebly expresses its thanks for the splendid business given and loyalty accorded us during the past year.

Likewise we wish you one and all a Happy Prosperous New Year 1931.

Such, however, cannot be accomplished by wishing or wailing, but by work and industry.

America as a whole seems obsessed with the fatal idea of getting rich quick, either by the stock market, the oil well, or the slot machine.

Whichever way one looks, he finds this spirit manifest: to get something for nothing.

Prosperity neither comes nor stays upon such a feeble foundation.

Better farming will result in better crops. Better merchandising will make better profits. Trading at home is essential to community prosperity that the merchant as well as others should buy of the farmer as well as otherwise. If we spend our money at home we have a chance to see it again.

There is the financing of crops that will require the utmost economy, yet unless the effort is made there will be no crops, and in this agricultural country if we have no crops we shall have not a bit of income.

By taking advantage of the opportunities we have, we may enjoy an earned and simple prosperity.

Henry Wilson, 1931

Henry Wilson 42, is Killed in Accident

Henry J. Wilson, aged 42 was killed when the car in which he was riding overturned Tuesday morning five miles north of Durant. His companion, who has not yet been identified, was released from the overturned  auto and disappeared and has not yet been apprehended by searchers.

Wilson suffered a fractured skull and numerous bruises and abrasion about the head and shoulders when the car turned completely over and settle in a ditch on the side of the road. It is not definitively known who was the driver of the car.

Wilson up to a short time ago lived in and near Caddo, but had moved to a farm some three miles north of Durant. He was a famous athlete, starring with the Haskell Indians during his early career; later he became a member of the Southeastern Teachers College athletic teams and was prominently mentioned for All American honors while playing football with the Haskell Indians.

Deceased is survived by his wife and an aunt, Mrs. Henry J. Byington, who lives here. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon with burial in the Caddo cemetery.

A. M. Hair

A.M. Hair is Dead

A.M. Hair died at his home 2 miles north of Kenefick Monday night of pneumonia, having been ill but a week. The funeral was held Wednesday, burial in Caddo Cemetery.

A.M.Hair was 47 years of age and had lived near Caddo about thirty years. He is survived by his wife and two children who are grown.

Mr. Hair was a good citizen, highly regarded by all who knew him, was a man of strictest honor and will sadly be missed by his numerous friends.

Attend A.M. Hair Funeral

Many friends from Kenefick attended the funeral of A.M. Hair at the Methodist church Wednesday. The teachers and many children of the Tushka School attended in a body, a son of Mr. Hair being one of the teachers there. Several friends from Caney and Atoka also present, attesting the esteem in which Mr. Hair was held by all who knew him.
