Will Pay 2c Each for Rat Scalps

Mayor Braudrick announces that until March 18^th, he will pay 2c each for all rat scalps brought to his office in Caddo.

There are no restrictions except that the rats must have been killed in Caddo.

No, the Mayor is not going in the sealskin fur business- he is simply trying to exterminate the rats in town.

This is a good chance for the boys to make some spending coin, have a lot of fun, and do a whole lot of good at the same time.

Don’t try to fool the mayor with mice- he wants rats, but he thinks you ought to kill the mice while you are at it- for free.

Make your dog earn his keep.

The Civic Club will pay a reward of $2.00 to the person who delivers the most scalps or tails to the mayor in the two weeks of March 5-12.  

Heritage Day 2009

Don’t forget that Saturday, October 3, is Heritage Day! The theme for this year is "Horses & Hitches, Overalls & Britches" to recognize the part horses and mules, farmers and cowboys have played in the lives of residents in the past as well as presently. The Buffalo Stampede 5k Run and 1 mile fun run will begin at 8am in front of the Presbyterian Church. Later there will be a parade and a full schedule of events and entertainment. Bill Proctor and his band will play and also provide opportunities for karaoke for anyone in the audience who wishes to participate.  There will be food, fun, and lots of fellowship. Come join us.

Runaway Causes Damage

Monday morning a mule team belonging to W. C. Castleberry ran away with a mower south on Arkansas street. Opposite Sand’s Restaurant they ran the mower into a team belonging to Mr. Trent. The mower struck one of the mares, breaking a hind leg above the knee.

The mule team was hitched and the traces dropped, yet they dragged the mower two blocks with the breast yoke. It was very unfortunate that the mare should be thus crippled, but it perhaps could not be avoided.

 

A Family Reunion

A family reunion was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Rogers and a very pleasant time was had.

This is the first time in fourteen years the family have been together.

Yard of the Year

We are getting ready to announce the winner of "Yard of the Year" honors on Saturday and two people mentioned that I've never posted photos of "Yard of the Month". Since all of these people have been in the newspaper, I don't think they will object to having their photos posted here. So in no particular order, here are a few photos of the winning yards of the past two years. I'm not going to try to catch up with all of the winners of the past. I'll be sure to let you know next week who gets the annual prize. And I'll post photos of their yard.

Who Will Be the Carnival Queen?

Remember the Queen contest closes Saturday night at 12 o’clock.

If you want to vote for your favorite you have only today and tomorrow. Two days only. Ask for Queen votes where you buy your goods.

The race is getting quite interesting and lively. First one then another is ahead. It looks like anybody’s race.

Counts will be made today at 5 pm; Saturday at 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 pm. Results will be posted on the bulletin board at The Cove, so that people may know frequently how the vote stands.

The merchants will be glad to give votes with cash purchases if you ask for them because they are boosting the Carnival.

Remember that none but yellow and green tickets count. The other colors are last year’s tickets and will not be counted, so do not put them in the voting boxes where they confuse the men who do the counting.

Someone has put a lot of old vote coupons in the ballot boxes. This the committee requests you not do as the tickets will not be counted and it only causes delays in counting because the old tickets have to be sorted out. The tickets this year are two colors, yellow and green, and no other colors will be counted unless they bear the signature of the contest manager.

Miss Harris is Carnival Queen

The Contest for Queen of the Corn Carnival closed Saturday night with much interest. The race finally narrowed to two contestants, Miss Nina Hauer and Miss Thelma Harris. The former receiving 273,000, and the latter receiving 306,000 votes, each receiving a larger vote than any previous queen.

Hundreds of people remained downtown until midnight to hear the returns, far more interst being manifested than in the last primary election. Both the young ladies were popular and deserving, but one had to lose. Miss Harris is a charming young lady and will make an elegant queen.

Horse Thief Caught

From the Durant Democrat- Deputy Sheriff Terry of Caddo and Policeman Bob Bell, after following the trail of a horse thief from Kenefick Monday morning, arrested Carl Cardeel, a young man about 18 years of age, within a few miles of Bennington.

Sometime during the night a fine horse belonging to Charles Bell of Kenefick was taken from the lot, but was not missed until Monday afternoon, when the Caddo men were notified. They took up the trail and followed it all night and this morning about daylight they located Cardeel at a Mr. Davis’ near Bennington. The young man stated that he had purchased the horse from someone near Kenefick. The horse was found in the stable.

The young man claims that he formerly lived here, and that his mother resides here, but her name does not appear on the city directory, and no one seems to know them.

$3,500 for Good Roads for Caddo

The finance committee of the Caddo Good Roads Club got busy last Saturday and in a little while secured pledges for nearly $,4000 for building roads extending out of Caddo. Besides these pledges in money there are a number of farmers who will give work of teams and tools for several days each.

Work on the roads began Thursday morning. Those roads that were in the worst condition being worked first.

It is planned to put every road leading to Caddo in good shape. A grader and plows pulled by a traction engine will be used where necessary, so that the roads my shed water, then it is planned to drag each road with a split-log drag after each rain, so that the roads will remain smooth, and will shed water, and will not become impassable bog holes.

In order that he people may know just who it is that is putting up for the road building we publish a list of the names and the amounts. Others will contribute no doubt, and their names will be added form week to week as the contributions are made.

Farmers Organize, 1919

Bryan Co. Farmers Organized Last Week

Over one hundred and fifty farmers from all parts of Bryan County met in Durant last week at the call of the County Farm Agent, County Council  of Defense, and the Durant Commercial Association, for the purpose of forming a County Wide Organization. It was the sense of the meeting that a county wide organization to look after peace time jobs was just as necessary as had been the County Council of Defense which looked after the war time jobs.

A temporary organization was formed with the following temporary officers: W. L. Rambo, chairman; J. W. Downs, vice-chairman; C. W. Brown, secretary. The committee on permanent organization was appointed as follows: W. L. Rambo, chairman, Durant; A. J. Turner, Kemp: Jake Sins, Blue; Mrs. McDonald, Armstrong; John Crutchfield, Caddo; B. B. Abernathy, Bokchito; L. C. Watkins, Calera; C. E. Thornly, Matoy; Walter Kennedy, Allison; C. W. Brown, Bryan County Farm Agent; Mrs. Kathern N. Jackson, County Woman Demonstrator; Floyd Hagood, Indian Farmer; and V. E. Kendall, J. W. Downs, J. B. Hickman and A. B. Davis, Durant.

Some of the first objectives to be undertaken by the new organization which will be perfected on a permanent foundation before the end of the month are: Better farming methods, under the directions of a Farm Bureau with the County Farm Agent and the County Woman Demonstrator as directors and assistants in this work; better roads, better schools, better markets, better stock, tick eradication, better housing conditions and the betterment of community social life.
