Maytubby for Treasurer

Jess Maytubby announces this week as a candidate for City Treasurer, subject to the city primary of March 17^th.

Jess is known to everybody in and out of town. He has been acting treasurer since Dr. Linch moved away. For many years he has held this place, and has given universal satisfaction.

Jess is a bookkeeper by occupation and knows just how the city’s books should be kept, and as treasurer his books have always been found correct.

He asks your support.

 

Maytubby Springs to Be Improved

Workmen, tools, and teams were taken out to Maybubby Springs Tuesday to begin work improving the property so that it will make a more describable place in which to seek health and to spend a vacation.

Years ago this place was considered a good health resort and thousands of people came every year to drink the water and recuperate.

It is the plan of the operators to build some camp houses, improve the road, and clean out the spring and increase the flow.

A little later further announcement will be made. The Springs are but three miles from the gravel road to Kenefick, and a good road may easily and cheaply be built to the spot.

Farmer's Union Being Organized Very Fast

Since our last report the following has been accomplished:

Monday nite Jan. 12 at Impson we had the assistance of our good friend Joe Marshall and organized a local of 22 members.

Tuesday nite, 13^th, at Robinson, 15 of the brethren came into the fold with assurance that many more will follow soon.

Wednesday, 14^th,  in company with Harry Haigh, we visited at Reynold’s Chapel, where we organized with 15.

Thursday nite, 15^th, at Cobb, where we were assisted by our friend Judge Porter Newman we landed a good local of 26.

Friday nite, 16^th, went to Matoy and in spite of threatening weather, had a fine bunch with result that a good local of 20 members was organized.

Saturday, 17^th, was spend rounding up the corners, getting ready for the big Farmer’s Union Convention which met in Oklahoma City the 19^th.

Sunday, the 18^th, in company with Brothers, Rich, Goad, and Walker of Bennington, we went to the City where most a week was spent in attendance upon the longest attended, most enthusiastic and most important State Convention the Farmer’s Union has ever had.

Monday, 27^th found us back on the job, giving the boys a chance to join our ranks in an effort to make our state just a little happier and better place to live in.

The county convention will be held in Bokchito Saturday January 31^st at 10am. The principal address will be delivered by our Judge Porter Newman.

Mrs. Attaway Dies

Mrs. W. H. Attaway died at their home near Bennington Tuesday morning at 4 o’clock. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in Durant, burial in Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. Attaway was 45 years of age, she had been in good health save for a slight heart attack a short time ago. Mr. Attaway was awakened by her struggles in time to see her draw her last breath, the death was so sudden.

Mr. and Mrs. Attaway formerly lived in Caddo and have many friends here.

To Try Broom Corn as Money Farm Crop

Mr. Ward and Mr. Callahan were in Caddo Monday and announced that they would be back here Saturday, March 7^th at Kenefick from 9 until 1:30 and at Caddo from 2 until 5 to make contracts for buying whatever broom corn raised in this section.

Mr. Odil raised it here for 30 years, but the trouble is it has to have a ready market. These men represent factories and are contracting to pay $90 a ton for the corn at harvest time, regardless of what the market may be.

Broom corn is planted about the time cotton is planted and is ready to harvest in 90 to 100 days so there is not much time waiting from seed time to harvest.

This part of the country certainly needs some other crop besides cotton and oats for a money crop. So The Herald cannot but see that broom corn might be that crop. It costs about 30c to seed an acre, so the other cost is labor and even though the crop might not turn out to be a third of a ton to the acre, still there is not much expense put into it.

If anybody is interested they can see one of these men at Mr. Pace’s store Saturday, March 7^th.

Jefferson Highway Map

I received this email from Mike Conlin the other day and I'm posting it here so you will visit his website and perhaps also explore the Jefferson Highway by following his maps. The Jefferson Highway project was very, very important in this area and our own Mr. W. F. Dodd was the director and local promoter.

Hello Pine to Palm people,

Today I drew the last line for the Jefferson Highway in Google Maps. I put that line right up to the granite obelisk at St. Charles and Common St. in New Orleans, the end of the Pine to Palm Highway. There is now a line in Google Maps all the way from Winnipeg, through Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana showing the street level route of the Jefferson Highway.

You can check it out at map . Click anywhere on the red line that is the Jefferson Highway and you will get a very detailed Google Map of that area showing the route of the JH. You will also be able to see the abandoned sections of the road and even the detours around lost pieces of the Pine to Palm Highway. Zoom in as far as you want then pan around in Google Maps. You can even turn on the satellite image and see the terrain.

This set of maps now makes it possible for anyone and everyone to drive on the Jefferson Highway, either just in your area or the whole thing. The whole thing is what I am going to do now! As I mentioned before I was aiming for the beginning of September to drive it in my car but I have a better offer now. A friend of mine, who just bought an RV, has convinced me to wait until he can close up his golf course in October and then he is going to drive over to Winnipeg. At the same time I am going to leave from New Orleans also heading for Winnipeg arriving there to meet him about November 1^st . We will see as many people as we can there and get our pictures taken at the stone marker at Mile 0 of the Pine to Palm Highway. We will then hook my car to his RV and using the maps that I just completed travel the Jefferson Highway back to New Orleans.

I am working out the details for that trip now. Our goals are to verify as much of the map detail as we can, to meet as many people as we can and to focus as much attention on the Jefferson Highway as we can. We will be contacting media outlets starting very soon to let them know that we are coming and honestly to let most people know that the JH even exists. We want to make some noise and draw some attention to our soon to be famous Highway.  

Some of you have noted the need for a revival of the Jefferson Highway Association and I couldn’t agree more. As we travel and meet people we are going to take names and build a contact list so that when the time is right we will have a core of people interested in doing that and we can make something happen.

During our trip down the JH I will be blogging on a daily basis, I just don’t know what form that will take yet. We are almost finished a Facebook Page for the JH and maybe we will post blogs and pictures on there on a daily basis. I will let you know as soon as we know. It will be fun and I hope you will join us for the trip.

 In the mean time it would be helpful if you all would go to the map in your area and see if there is anything that you think needs tweaking. Some of it was difficult to figure out! I think I have gotten most of it but your knowledgeable local eyes are welcome. Have fun with the maps. Five Deaths

February 20, 1931

Death Takes Toll of Four Caddo Pioneers

J. R. Allen

Saturday evening J. R. Allen, 63 years of age, died at this home near Liberty, after a lingering illness. The funeral was held at Caddo Baptist church Sunday at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. G. A. Gurley. Internment in Caddo Cemetery.

Mr. Allen was a good citizen, a good neighbor, and a consistent, devout member of the Baptist church, and his departure sincerely mourned by all.

 

Mrs. Robinson

Mrs. Lorena Robinson died at the home of Dr. Roy L. Cochran Saturday night at 11 o’clock of heart troubles.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. G. E. Tyson, pastor.

Mrs. Robinson was 66 years of age, had lived near Caddo all her life, was a member of the Methodist church, and is survived by two sons, C. D. and June, three daughters, Carrie, Mrs. Folsom, and Mrs. Jim Gross.

She was apparently well a half hour before her death, when she was seized with a heart attack to which she has been subject several years.

 

J. A. Wood

J. A. Wood died at his home in Caddo Tuesday morning at 6:45 after an illness of several years.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. G. E. Tyson.

Mr. Wood had passed his 79^th year; came to Caddo 25 years ago from Pilot Point, Texas. He was a member of the Methodist church, and was a man of strictest honor and probity. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Luther and Dolph, two daughters, Mrs. Izard, and Mrs. Jones.

The attendance at the funeral was large, and the floral offering beautiful, attesting to the high esteem in which deceased was held by the community.

Grandpa Joines

Grandpa Joines died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son west of Caddo. The remains Sunday were taken to Orangeville, Texas for burial. His two sons John and Marion, are well known to Caddo people.

Baby Tyson

William Warner, infant son of Rev. and Mrs. George E. Tyson, died Tuesday night at 10 o’clock. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock by Rev. R. O. Callahan, at the Methodist parsonage. Loving hands tenderly held the little remains to rest in Caddo Cemetery. The baby was but 11 days old, and his little life had despaired of since his third day.

Matilda Manning

Mrs. Matilda Manning, Aged 92, Died Dec. 25

Christmas at midnight, Mrs. Matilda Manning died at Ardmore. The remains were brought to Caddo Friday and buried in Caddo Cemetery after the funeral at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. G. E. Tyson.

Mrs. Manning was 92 years old last April, had lived most of her life in and near Caddo. She lived her long before there was a town, and was one of the first settlers of the town.

Deceased was a member of the Methodist church. She is survived by a son, A. F. Manning and two daughters, Mrs. Amelia Harris and Mrs. J. W. Crutchfield. There are many grandchildren.

Of Choctaw stock, Mrs. Manning married Dr. Manning who came from Georgia. Until last spring deceased had enjoyed extra good health, was able to get about unaided, and was in full possession of mental faculties.

The funeral was attended by a large number of relatives and a great concourse of friends of the family. Great banks of flowers also attested to the esteem in which she was held by all.

Mrs. Manning was one of those women whose hand was always outstretched in aid to the needy, to help the struggling. Her home was a place where none were ever denied food and shelter. She dwelt in the hearts of those for whom she had wrought and toiled, and leaves a heritage of honor and helpfulness to humanity.

Mrs. Harve McGraw

Mrs. Harve McGraw Dies Wednesday

Tuesday night at the hospital in Durant, Mrs. R. H. McGraw, wife of Have McGraw of Caddo, died after a lingering illness. Mrs. McGraw had been sick for the past month and had been in the hospital for the last three weeks in an effort to ascertain what the cause of her illness could be.

Mrs. McGraw was the mother of five girls and one boy, ranging in age from 6 to 22, being Margret Jayne, Virginia, Lillian, Reavis, Loretta and Addie Bob.

The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church here Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Rev. Geo. E. Tyson in charge. Interment was in the Caddo Cemetery.

The many friends of the family here sympathize with them in their hour of sorrow.
