Another New Chapter

A break from the past to keep you informed of the present:

Caddo’s new city council made their first public appearance last night, including the swearing in of two members. Gary and I have watched three different councils in action, but it was the first time we have managed to be there to see the ceremony or the election of the mayor. Both were interesting. The new group has some divergent ideas and plans which became apparent within just a few minutes. It may take some time for them to align themselves and go forward. Otherwise they will waste a lot of time opposing each other. There is also a “learning curve” in any new position. It will take time for the new members to learn the rules and procedures of meetings. Two members embarrassed themselves last night by being totally unprepared. Another seemed very agitated at having such a large audience. They will adjust.  However, I sense that Caddo is on the verge of some major changes. I plan to be around to watch. And I'll keep you posted!

The Civic Club

The Civic club met on their regular day with Mrs. Bilbo with a splendid attendance of members and one visitor, Mrs. I. W. Wheeler of Springfield, Mo.

The executive committee had the constitution and by-laws ready, which were read, amended, and adopted.

Some children were reported for the charity committee who were anxious to attend school, but could not purchase the necessary books and clothing. The school committee was appointed to secure the books; these were afterward provided by the city council and the charity committee was directed to see to their other needs.

The six committees of the club reported work on their programs.

The suggestion was made that the cemetery work be abandoned unless we can get collectors who have time to collect, and people who should be interested, to pay their dues. This work is growing larger all the time and cannot be run on glory. The Club will ask for collectors at Caney and Kenefick as our cemetery is largely owned by both these towns. Several new names were proposed for membership.

Letters were read from R. E. Telford of Abbeville, S.C. and A. E. Walker, of Holdenville. They were very appreciative of our work and sent substantial remembrances. Also one from Miss Agnes Carraway of Houston, which made us all feel we were doing things worthwhile.

The club unanimously voted a card of thanks to G. A. Winters of Durant for one dozen wisterias for our gates and arches at the cemetery. Mr. Winters every year remembers the cemetery in a substantial way and takes a great deal of interest in the work.

This was not Mrs. Bilbo’s regular time to entertain and as she was not very well the different committees arranged the refreshments which were delicious and enjoyed very much.

While the guests lingered around the table they indulged in little chats that are so dear to every woman.
