Is China and Trade the Real Contention?
There seems to be greater concern about what Japan may propose at the disarmament conference than there is of European affairs.
The commercial world is afraid- more especially the United States- that the Japanese government has intentions to control the markets, oil, coal, and mineral resources of China, and may go so far as to dictate what other nations may supply China’s needs of articles that Japan cannot furnish. And what is more to the point, even in that instance, Japan may become the “middle man” that is be the agent and get commissions from both parties. Though the present alliance between England and Japan should stand, in the end England will gain nothing, and may lose considerable.
Commercialism has in the past been the instigation of many wars. Germany’s desire to control the world’s markets was the real cause of the last war and the fall of three great governments.
It is the hope that the results of the conference will produce a feeling of tranquility, security, good will, and a blessing to all mankind. The Herald has faith in the wisdom of the men who are to take part in this meeting, as it is a gathering of statesmen as well as politicians- men who will place statesmanship above politics.
