Smith-Dollins

Last Sunday evening Aug. 21, Mr. Allie Smith and Miss Mildred Dollins were united in marriage near Pritchard, Rev. Sam North performing the ceremony.

Miss Dollins is the well known and loveable daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Dollins who live near Matoy. She is a young lady of fine character and is loved by all who know her.

Mr. Smith is a splendid young man who numbers his friends by the scores. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith who live near Buffalo school house.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith will make their home near Buffalo for the present.

The many friends of these young people wish for them a long happy and prosperous wedded life. May God’s richest blessing rest upon them.

Durant, Caddo Lions Meet

Last Tuesday marked the return visit of the Durant Lions Club with the Caddo club and a large delegation of visitors was present here for the occasion. The luncheon was served to the visitors at noon by the Presbyterian ladies. A feature of the program was a one act play, “Down with the Men” presented by Misses Oleta Davis, Dorothy Zinnecker, Agnes Burns, Clorine Slaughter, Natalie Morrison, Lavern German, and Marjorie Keichner of Y.W.C.A. organization of Southeastern. Another feature of the program was a guitar solo by Oden Harwood.

Eugene S. Briggs, past district governor of Lions, was a speaker and made a few short pointed remarks which were well received. The local Lions were introduced by John L. Boland and the visitors by G.T. Stubbs.

Kenefick News Items

Services at the Baptist church were well attended Sunday morning and evening. Both Sunday Schools had attendance. Every one come and make the church work better.

The Kenefick Home Demonstration Club sent a basket of nice vegetables and one of mixed flowers to the vegetable and flower show at Durant last Friday. They report a fine show.

The entire town was shocked last Wednesday night by a head-on collision between Engines No. 501 and 502 near the depot. The engineer on 501 was the only man injured. Wrecking crews from Denison, Durant, and other nearby places came to assist in clearing the track. The wreck caused great damage to the engines and the cars and we are glad there were no deaths.

Mr. and Mrs. Lafoone had as visitors in their home last Sunday their son and wife who are in school at S.T.C.

Mrs. Otto Smith called on Mrs. Green Monday.

Mr. Henry Colbert and wife of Oklahoma City spent Monday night and Tuesday with their aunt, Miss Lizzie Davis.

Miss Aggie Boyd of Durant spent Friday night with friends in Kenefick.

Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Miller and children were in Durant Monday to see Mr. George Morris who was seriously hurt in a car wreck several days ago.

CHS Commencement Is Held This Week

Friday will mark the close of the school of Caddo for this year. This brings to an end one of the most successful years to be had by the schools and one record- that of the largest graduating class in the history of the school- has been made a precedent.

Eighteen boys and thirteen girls will receive their diplomas at the commencement night program Friday. The following are the Seniors for 1931:

Mary Adeline Boland, Mary Lois Goddard, Mary Adeline McGraw, Katherine Mugler, Marinell Kuschke, Virginia McGraw, Lillian McGraw, Dorothy Harris, Thelma Hall, Rosa Lee Owens, Lottie Rogers, Lillian Smith and Theresa Wallis.

Raymond Stapleton, William L. Pinson, Clifton Wood, David Wilson, Frank Semple, Bruce Pace, Ura Nickles, Woodrow Mills, Glynn Martin, Robert Hamilton, Homer Geter, Jack Copeland, Joe Copeland, Kenneth M. Davis, Billy Edwards, Bill Driver, and Roy Jones.

Sunday at the auditorium the Baccalaureate sermon was preached by Rev. Geo. E. Tyson. Tuesday night the class night program was enjoyed by an exceptionally large crowd. Thursday night the commencement exercise for the eighth grade was held.

Friday night the commencement exercise will be held at the auditorium with T.M. Beaird of the Extension Division of the University of Oklahoma as the speaker.

Friday Marks Close of Schools for 1931

Last Friday marked the close of the Caddo Schools for this year with the commencement exercises held that night at the high school auditorium.

Awards for the year were also made at that time with the following certificates issued:

Confederate Veteran, R. P. Noland , Succumbs at Age of 91 Years

One of the last of the state’s Confederate veterans, R. P. Noland, 91 years of age, passed away Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Long, 523 North Eighth Avenue.

Due to his advanced age, Mr. Noland’s health had been poor for a number of years, but he remained active until just before his passing. He was born in Carrolton, Miss. June 17^th, 1842 and had he lived 10 days longer, he would have celebrated his 92^nd birthday.

Mr. Noland became affiliated with the Baptist church early in life and was a devout Christian. His son, Rev. W. N. Noland, now of Oklahoma City, has been a minister in the Baptist church for many years.

Surviving the deceased are Reverend Noland and three daughters, Mrs. Gaines Bankston, McCarley, Miss.; Mrs. Tom Nelson, Goliad, Tex.; and Mrs. Long. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon in Bokchito with Rev. Barnes of Durant and Rev. Cottingham, Bokchito, in charge. Burial was at the Bokchito cemetery.

Obituary

R. P. Noland was born June 17, 1941 in Carroll county Miss. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Long at Durant, Okla. June 6, 1934 at 6pm after a lingering illness of eight weeks.

At the age of 18 the call of war attracted him and he joined Company B, 15^th Mississippi Volunteer infantry and served the Confederacy four years, the duration of the War Between the States. He had many adventures and narrow escapes and received one serious wound. He was in the famous battle of Shiloh on Pittsburg Landing and in the siege of Vicksburg, besides other encounters of lesser note. He served under the command of Gen. Zollicoffer until the death of that officer, then was in divisions commanded by Generals Tillman and Adams.

After the war closed he returned to his home and in 1867 was married to Miss Martha Williams. To this union was born six children, three boys and three girls. J.R. Noland and J.J. Noland who passed on in 1902, just three months difference in their deaths. Another son, Rev. W.N. Noland, of Oklahoma City, and three daughters, Mrs. Gaines Bankston, of McCarley, Miss; Mrs. Tom Nelson of Goliad, Tex.; and Mrs. Frank Long of Durant, Okla. with whom he has made his home the past 35 years. His wife proceeded him in death 47 years ago.

Besides the above mentioned children, he is survived by 17 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was 91 years, 11 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Bokchito Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock conducted by Rev. Barnes of Durant and Rev. Cottingham of Bokchito. Active pallbearers were the grandsons and granddaughters’ husbands of deceased who were: C.H. Neal, Dock Noland, Preston Noland of Bokchito, J.E. Hulsey, and Clarence Jeldy of Oklahoma city. He was laid to rest in the family plot in Bokchito cemetery Thursday afternoon.

F.A. McAleer

Here is a little more information about Mr. McAleer, who was mentioned yesterday. This is how I start building a file on someone and find out more about them. Each bit of information adds to the picture of our ancestors.

F.A. McAleer is now “batching”. He doesn’t like it. He will soon have his drug stock here and the new building finished.

October 3, 1902

F.A. McAleer is papa of a 6lb girl.

We had quite a severe wind one night last week. It moved Mr. McAleer’s house partly off its foundation.

F.A. McAleer got word that all lumber needed to finish his storeroom would reach here by October 3.

October 31, 1902

F.A. McAleer has returned from a business trip to Texas.

F.A. McAleer has been appointed postmaster at this place and has made application to make it a money order office. We hope he will succeed. We need such a convenience.

November 28, 1902

Our postmaster, F.A. McAleer is liked by everybody. He says he will have a money order department as soon as the appointment day comes and the department notifies him, which will be January 2, 1903.

April 13, 1905

Tom Smith, William Scarlet, Dr. Hamilton, Daniel Walker, J.B. Lloyd, F.A. McAleer, W.C. Impson, R.M. Stone, Will Gardner, Miss hardy, Ella Riddle, Teddie  Avant, W.D. Chastain, T.M. Chastain, D. Lyford, and Mr. James were among the many that saw the President (Roosevelt) on his trip through the Territory.

Palace Pharmacy

To those not familiar with the profession of pharmacy it would seem but a simple matter for anyone to enter a drug store and sell or dispense the thousand and one articles contained therein, overlooking the fact that many drugs, and especially chemicals, are harmless in themselves, but when combined with others become the most deadly of poisons. Mr. F.A. McAleer, the manager, is a thoroughly competent and experienced pharmacist, the only one in the Indian Territory whose name appears in the American Pharmaceutical Association…

The Luck of the Fisherman

J.B. Lloyd and F.A. McAleer caught a fine string of fish at Cherokee Lake last week. They caught several that would weigh three or four pounds. Mr. McAleer had the luck of all fishermen, he did not quite get wet all over, but nearly so. He slipped on his seat and falling in had to do some tall scrambling to keep his feet dry. His feet and hands were about all that escaped the water.

 

Bokchito News

I recently purchased a copy of The Bokchito News, 1904-1906, abstracted by Rozell Sangster Thomas. It has lots of Caddo news and I’ve been slowly finding bits and pieces of information for my files. There are some Caddo obits so I thought I would include a few this morning.

August 31, 1905

A Good Man Dead

Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at his home on Main Street, after a two-day serious illness, Archibald M. Russell died. Deceased was nearly sixty-six years old, having been born October 17, 1839 in North Carolina. He gave four of the best years of his life to the Confederate cause and was a gallant soldier. He served with General Cooper in the Indian Territory toward the close. The funeral occurred Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock a the Caddo Cemetery, conducted by Caddo Lodge #3A.F.& A.M. there was a large gathering of the friends of the deceased who paid the last respects to the remains of this good old man. November 23, 1905

A Murderer

Charles E. Pitts was arrested Sunday afternoon and placed in jail at Atoka, charged with killing a man near Caney. He was arrested half way between the two towns. The remains of the man who was killed was almost cremated, only one arm being found in the ashes on the fire into which the body had been thrown on the Pitts farm.

 December 21, 1905

The sudden news of the death of Mrs. R.A. McAleer, age 26, and wife of F.A. McAleer, the most prominent druggist of the city, last Saturday morning at 1:30 o’clock, was a shock to the whole community that was received with deep sympathy for the husband and three little children. One child is only six months old and very feeble. Mrs. McAleer is the daughter of L.M. Byrd, of Self, Texas, and came here from Caddo only a short time ago. She had suffered with slow consumption for six years, which finally caused her death. The funeral services were held at 3:30 pm at the Methodist Church last Sunday, to which a great many friends were in attendance. After the services the internment took place at the city cemetery and everybody accompanied the deceased to her last resting place.

June 14, 1906

Death breathed its icy breath upon the home of F.A. McAleer Tuesday the 12^th at 6:20 am and again Wednesday 13^th at 9am. The first taken away was Myrtle Louise, age 3 years 9 months and 5 days. The next was Arilda Cleo, age 6 months, 27 days. They had been sick a very short time with whooping cough. Thrice has death entered the home of Mr. McAleer in six months. We sincerely sympathize with the bereaved ones.  (This left Mr. McAleer with one son.)

H.T. Ahrens has nearly completed his new residence in West Caddo.

Miss Kate Dabney, after a pleasant visit by two in weeks in Caddo, returned to her home at Bonham.

H.M. Dunlap’s new brick residence is nearing completion. It will be one of the finest in Caddo when completed.

Arrangements have been made for the building of six large brick business houses on Buffalo street east of the bank.

Several parties from Sherman were here Tuesday en route to Wapanucka to be present at an auction sale of lots at that place.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Neal (colored) at Stringtown on Easter Sunday- three boys, named Peter, James and John.

W.B. Hendricks, an old furniture man of Sherman, Texas, is with us this week assisting in opening the new furniture store of J.W. Coker. We hope that Mr. Hendricks will remain with us as he is a good business man and understands the furniture business. He will be glad to meet you and give you such prices as you never got before. In regards to the crop prospect, A.B. McCoy told us that his fruit was in excellent shape, but that his oats were almost ruined.

Impressive Easter services were held at the Methodist Church South on Sunday. A large congregation was present both morning and evening.

A box supper was given Friday night at the home of E. G. Baxter five miles southeast of town. About $65 was realized. Several of the town people attended.

Sunday evening while Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Manning were driving their horse became freighted and ran away. The buggy was overturned and the occupants thrown out. They were considerably bruised, but not seriously hurt.

R.A. Riddles of Caddo was down Thursday. He has shipped out more hogs from Durant and Caddo than has been marketed from any other two towns in the Territory. Durant Times Eagle

John McCoy, who has been attending the Marion Sims Medical College at St. Louis, is spending a few days with relatives and old friends here. He will return soon and when he comes back he will be a full-fledged M.D. John’s friends were all glad to see him.

The race program of the Blue County Fair Racing and Park Association are out. The American racing rules are to govern. Four races each day are provided for, and the purses amount to about $800. There will be other attractions besides. The meeting promises to be a success. The grounds are now being put in readiness. The dates are June 6, 7, and 8.

Grandmother Mahana Dies

Saturday, June 3, Mrs. Addeline Mahana, aged mother of S. P. Mahana of the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, passed to her reward and was laid to rest Sunday afternoon in the Pleasant Hill cemetery, Rev. L. D. Saunders conducting the funeral services.

Grandmother Mahan has resided in this country for 30 odd years and was well loved by all who knew her. Her patient Christian life has been an example and incentive to all with whom she came in contact.

She was left a widow many years ago and reared a family of seven children to maturity. Of these only two survive her, Mrs. John Wallis of Sansaba, Tex.  and S. P. Mahana with whom she made her home.

The entire community greatly sympathizes with the bereaved family.
