Grammar School News

The grammar school is back to regular work since the promotions have been made.  A number of new pupils have entered for the second semester of school.

The picture of the school building and children, which was taken a few days ago, has come. It is very good and large, showing every pupil plainly. Bernice Braudrick was ill with influenza the latter part of last week. We are glad that she is able to be in school again.

Camille Cornett is ill with the  chickenpox. We hope that she recovers soon so that she will be back in school.

A number of students have been absent this week due to illness. The fifth and third grades in Miss Wood’s room served hot chocolate Tuesday.

It is said that we can learn better through the use of more than one of the senses, and the grammar students are trying to sell enough candy to buy a moving picture machine to reveal geographical pictures, pictures of hygiene, history and the like. The candy came Tuesday morning and it was found to be good, wholesome candy. A greater part of it is milk chocolate and we don’t believe that you would regret paying five cents for a bar of it. Help us get our machine.

The pretty weather is surely appreciated by all of the pupils, after such inclement weather over the weekend.

A little girl who entered school last week said that she didn’t know whether or not she had a father, but when asked who her daddy was she answered, “Oh! My daddy is Dan Marshall.”

Times will change! A little six-year-old girl was heard this week complaining that Santa Claus brought  her a pretty doll when she’d much rather had a tricycle.

Thanksgiving Service

At the Royal Theatre next Thursday morning from 10 until 11, Union Thanksgiving Services.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend. It is but a little thing to ask that one hour of the day be devoted to Thanksgiving.

Things may not be as we should like them. The prices may not be as high, sickness may have come, the crops may have been less than we expected. But things could be worse.

Too may of us are engaged in looking at the worst instead of the looking for the best. So let us put aside worldly cares for the hour and give thanks to the Giver of all good things for His manifold blessings.

New Farmers’ Order

J.J. Ridgway, J.S. Turner, and J.D. Oliphant were in Caddo Tuesday on business of the Farmers’ Fraternal and Economic Protective Order.

This is a new organization of which these gentlemen are the originators. It has for its purpose the economic and fraternal benefit of its members. Caddo being a central palace, has been select as headquarters for the time. Mr. Ridgway is the supreme vice-president; Mr. Turner is the supreme secretary-treasurer; and Mr. Oliphant is the supreme representative, being t he principal organizer.

At Methodist Church

Rev. W. J. Gray occupied the pulpit for the first time at the Methodist church Sunday morning. He was well received by his people, who wish him a successful year.

Sunday School is improving each Sunday. Several are taking the Teachers’ Course at Durant this week. Remember the School meets at 9:45 each Sunday morning. All are welcome.

The Durant League rendered the program at the League hour Sunday evening. A large number assembled and were well paid for coming as the young folks gave something worth while.

Rev. Gray announces regular service for the week. Everyone is cordially invited to come.

Dr. Rappolee Dead

Dr. H.E. Rappolee died Monday at Oklahoma City. His remains were buried in Madill, where has made his home the past eight years. Until eight years ago Dr. Rappolee practiced his profession in Caddo and has many friends here who will regret to know of his death. He had been in ill health two years.

Miss Trout Marries

At Coweta last Saturday night Mr. Virgil C. Wisdom and Miss Willie Mae Trout were married by Rev. W. F. Wisdom, father of the groom. Miss Trout was raised in Caddo and has many friends here who will wish her happiness. Mr. Wisdom is a fine young business man of Muskogee. Mrs. Wisdom will continue in the office of E.B. Maytubby, county assessor.

Atoka Lawyer Drowns

Clarence McCasland, 60-years old, of Atoka, was found drowned in a creek south of Atoka Tuesday. A coroner’s jury determined that his death was accidental, cause by his falling from a bridge into the creek. He had been missing from his home since late Sunday afternoon, when a county-wide search for him was begun. Mr. McCasland was a veteran lawyer in Southeastern Oklahoma.

At Nazarene church

We have changed our revival date to March 6-20 and Rev. Eugene Lewis will do the preaching in the place of Rev. Roland, as Roland, for some reason, didn’t see fit to come. Everybody come out. We will appreciate the cooperation of the other churches.

Rain and cold

Warm weather and sunshine having prevailed long enough to make us feel that spring had come to stay, suddenly departed last Sunday. The day broke with the sun concealed behind a veil of misty clouds and before mid-afternoon a steady down pour of southeast rain had set in , continuing until late Monday. Monday night a norther swept in and though the sun has been shining, the thermometer has played around 30 about all this week. The light freeze is not thought to have damaged fruit and gardens, but the rain stopped oat sowing. The grain acreage may be short as a result, many farmers having quit sowing before they were through.

Died: Last week a Sterrett dentist named Ray took a dose of medicine out of the wrong bottle. He is now dead.

G. W. Vining and Sandy Finch, two white men, who were arrested near Colbert by Deputy Marshal Davis a few days ago, charged with counterfeiting, were tried in the Commissioner's Court there and bound over under $500 bond to await the action of the grand jury. They were lodged in the Ardmore Jail.

Caney- We have had cooler weather. Cotton is opening fast and will be ready to pick soon.

Mike Riley has been very sick with brain fever. He is better now although his case was considered hopeless for a time.

Mrs. Wolf, of Caddo, is camping at Mr. Ravin's spring for her health.

Mr. Brooks, the Choctaw preacher, will hold services here the fourth Sunday.

Mr. Hanson, of Utica, stopped with Mr. Ravins this week.

Caddo- Mrs. Edna Hogue is recovering from injuries received last week.

Abbot Leflore is convalescent. He was very sick for several days.

O.S.Shoemake, of Bennington, spent Tuesday in the city on business.

Marshal D. Savoy, of Savoy, Texas, is visiting his sister, Mrs. W. F. Dodd.

Mrs. Tennessee Hunter, of Mayhew, was in Caddo Saturday on business.

Dr. W. B. McCaskill, of Sterrett, went up to Atoka Tuesday to meed the medical board.

Jim Council and Joe Black have opened a lunch stand next to Booker's saddle shop on Main Street.

J. L. Hull of Bokchito, returned home Monday from Pontotoc where he has been looking after his ranch.

John J. Curtis, of Durant, has been in the city this week visiting the family of his son-in-law, W. L. D. Unsell.

Mr. and Mrs. Isaac White, of Hope, Arkansas, who have been visiting the family of S. B. Riddle, have returned home.

J.C. Woodword and family, of Bonham, spent several days this week at Maytubby Springs, Caddo's health resort. 

Two Good Women

I'd like to take this opportunity to post the passing this week of two of Caddo's best women, Wilma Jordan and Catherine Joines. I knew and loved both of them. I had the privilege of going to church with them and visiting in their homes. They lived long, faithful lives. Good people. (click on their name for obit)

Edith Adair

(Of course this caught my eye because of the sponsor- Miss Valentine Moon. One more story to add to the Moon history. And I thought it odd that Miss Moon didn't jump in to try to save the girl. Perhaps she couldn't swim.)

Edith Adair Drowns in River Saturday

Miss Edith Adair, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warner Adair of Caddo, was drowned in the Blue River near Armstrong 6 miles south of Caddo Saturday afternoon about 3 o’clock.

The tragedy occurred a short distance east of the bridge. Edith and about 15 of her girl companions, sponsored by Miss Valentine Moon, teacher in junior high school, were having a hiking party on the bank of the stream near the hole of water used in the summer by bathers. The girls were holding to a wire cable tied to the limb of a tree for the use of divers and swinging out over the water. Edith swung twice and remarked that the high ride made her feel weak and that she did not care to swing any more. Her companions, children like, eagerly bantered her to try again. Reluctantly she took hold of the cable and swung out, but her strength was too far gone to bring her back to shore. Her hands slipped and she dropped, disappearing in the 15-foot water.

Witnesses said she did not say a word or utter a cry as she fell. She came to the surface of the water twice, but there was little sign of a struggle. It is probable that she fainted and went into the river in an unconscious state of mind.

Nobody, but members of the party, was near enough to offer assistance. One of the girls, Gladys Webber, 14 years old, went into the stream. She is a good swimmer, but the chilly water was too much for her and she was driven back to land.

As quickly as possible the help of a man at Armstrong was secured. With the aid of a boat and hook he succeeded in bringing Edith’s lifeless form to the bank, fifteen minutes after she dropped from the swing.

First aid was administered and distress calls were sent to Caddo and Durant. Help soon arrived from both places. A pulmoter was taken to the scene, but too late to be used. Life had already left the body of the girl.

Mr. Adair was working on the school building at Midway at the time of his daughter’s death and Mrs. Adair was at home. Both arrived at the river within a few minutes after the tragedy.

The corpse was brought to Caddo immediately and placed in the Adair home to be prepared for burial.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Baptist church, of which Edith was a member. The services were conducted by Rev. H. T. Wiles, pastor of the Baptist church, and Rev. W. J. Gray, pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial was had in the Caddo Cemetery. Both services were attended by a large crowd.

News of Edith’s death was a painful shock to the entire neighborhood. She was one of the town’s sweetest and most loved young ladies. She always took an earnest part in the work of her church and Sunday School. In high school she was a junior and her excellent work there never failed to put her grade among the best. In her death, the town lost one of its brightest flowers; in her death, Mr. and Mrs. Adair lost a priceless treasure, a treasure that can never be replaced.
