Lingo-Leeper Safe is Jimmied by Burglars

Burglars robbed the safe of the Lingo Leeper Co. of about $20 Saturday noon, leaving signs of their visit but no trace as to the perpetrators.

It was while Bert Fryer, the manager had gone to lunch. He had closed the safe door, but he did not lock it, also he locked the office and gates to the yard, but evidently the thieves entered through a hole in the fence. A jimmy was used to prize open a window, and the same tool was used to open the cash compartment of the safe.

Officers were quickly on the job, and think they have some idea as to who the thieves are.

Auto Burns in Country

Last Wednesday morning, John Green had the misfortune to lose his auto by fire.

He, with his wife, had been to town and had remained all night owing to slippery roads. They essayed to go home next morning, and got near his father’s place four miles north of town when they decided to go on in on foot.

Looking back from the home they discovered the car in flames. They managed to extinguish the flames by hard work, but the car was ruined, only two wheels and the chassis being saved.

Mrs. Airington Dies

Mrs. Noah Airington died at her home three miles south of town Friday after an illness of about a year. The remains were buried in the Caddo cemetery, the funeral being conducted by Rev. G.A. Gurley.

Mrs. Airington was 49 years of age and is survived by three boys- Wiley, Willie, and Alvin, all grown. She was a daughter of W. A. Cariker and wife who live at Armstrong. About a year ago her husband died after being suddenly stricken.

Mrs. Airington was a good woman, one who cared for her family and for her neighbors.

She had lived at the homestead for many years, raising her family.

Miss Mugg Entertains

A delightful party was given last Saturday evening at the home of Miss Ann Mugg, honoring her weekend guest, Miss Bess Fay Yarbrough of Sherman.

The rooms were tastily decorated with black cats, witches, and other Halloween decorations. Progress forty-two was enjoyed by the guest until a late hour. Other games including fortune-telling, and stunts also furnished some amusement.

Delightful refreshments were served to the following guests: Misses Bess Fay Yarbrough, Geneviene Keys, Coleen Thompson, Agnes Maytubby, ____ Intolubee. Messrs. Joe Clements, Carroll Franks, Jim Styron, Harry Pace, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chiles.

New Road

Farm-Market Road Started to Kenefick

Farm to Market Road Inspected by McGowan

Bill McGowan was here Tuesday inspecting several of the proposed farm to market roads in Bryan county. He went over the one we desire running east, and was favorably impressed with the route. He was accompanied by County commissioners Lee, Diffey, and Streetman. These commissioners are in favor of this road, too.

It will serve a large territory not heretofore reached by a hard surfaced road, though the road-bed is in good shape.

Right-of-way has been secured for widening of the Caddo-Kenefick road so that there may be a better dump to hold the gravel already placed thereon.

Commissioner Lee has a big tractor and grader now at work grading this six miles of road just to see what it will do. If the machine does the work the county may buy it. Anyway, we get a lot of free grading done as a demonstration.

This grader was working Wednesday morning.

First Bale of Cotton Brought in by Mrs. Sawyer

Caddo got its first bale of cotton Monday noon. It was raised by Mrs. N. B. Sawyer, ginned by the Cherokee Gin, brought $7.76 a hundred and a premium of $30, given by the merchants of Caddo.

Mrs. Sawyer has a crop on both sides of the Farmers Gin, and she and her crew picked this cotton Monday morning. They were aided by a number of folks in town who desired to help Mrs. Sawyer.

August 24^th is about the right time for the first bale. In 1915 Caddo had ginned 1000 bales by the 1^st of September, but that does not happen often.

Odel is Plowing

W.D. Odel is a good farmer. He planted a lot of watermelons this year, but did not attempt to sell any. He has given them freely to his neighbors and others, not forgetting the editor.

Odel also took a lot of them to the Wesley Brotherhood Monday night, and the men enjoyed the feast very much.

Mr. Odel has a contract breaking a lot of land with a Farmall for an insurance company that has a lot of land near Kenefick. He works every day the weather permits, and he is getting the job done in fine shape.

Parker has Garden

Beecher Parker has a garden by his store east of the railroad. He works spare hours in it, while waiting for trade to open up. In this garden he raises everything and his wife puts a lot of it up for winter.

There is nothing like taking advantage of opportunities that come to us every day for beating Old Man Hard Times. We cannot do much by wishing, but we can do a lot by working.

Mrs. Jack Lillie and Miss Emma Lillie of Kenefick shopped in this city Thursday.

Mrs. Thomas Craghead has returned from a two weeks visit with her sister in Dallas.

Miss Etoy Dickey of Ringling, spent the weekend with her cousin, Fern Dickey here.

Mrs. Alice Curtiss of Emporia Kansas is visiting Mrs. J. M. Goddard here for a while.

Misses Mary Jane and Maggie Lee Bass of Durant visited Mrs. H. F. Bass Monday.

Mrs. S. S. Sessions and daughter, Mrs. Jimmie Harris, of Kenefick, were here Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dale and son of Wilson visited Mr. and Mrs. Roy Berber Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Jess Heath and children arrived in Caddo Saturday for a visit with friends.

Mrs. Wideman and daughter, Irene of Kingston was here last week visiting Mrs. F. L. Booker.

Mrs. J. N. Nation, two daughters, and son Ralph left Saturday for an extended visit in Louisiana.

Misses Marguerite and Zuileka Boland left Sunday to attend O.U. at Norman during the summer.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Slack left Saturday for Wagner where they will make their home with their son Bud.

Mrs. Carter McCalman and children have returned from a visit in Altus with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Izzard.

Mr. and Mrs. Pack Boxly of Dallas visited Mrs. H. T. Chiles and daughters  Friday. Mrs. Boxly is a sister of Mrs. Chiles.

Miss Zuileka Boland returned home recently from Schoenchen Kansas after having taught in the schools there the past year.

Mrs. Teel of Kingston is attending the bedside of her aunt, Mrs. Booker. Her many friends will be glad to know she is much improved.

Mr. and Mrs. Lake Brewer and Dr. and Mrs. Nettleton were among the Caddoites attending the Masonic meeting at Bokchito Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Moran of Altus came in Sunday and have since been enjoying a visit with relatives and friends in and near Caddo.

Mrs. Foster Baily and young daughter have returned to Sulphur after an extended visit here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Maytubby.

Wesly Robertson, of Oklahoma City, visited his mother, Mrs. Vivia Locke the past week. His sister Bunnie accompanied him home for a short visit.

Misses Madge and Nell Moore of Ringling have returned home after a week’s visit in Caddo as guests of their aunt, Mrs. H.I. Meadows and daughters.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Styron and son of Oklahoma City were visiting friends in Caddo a short time Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Styron were enroute to Dallas for a visit with friends.

Mrs. W.N. Green, Mrs. Hal Watkins, Mrs. C.D. Dale of Atoka, and Mrs. Harry Pace, of Stamford, were here Wednesday attending a “shower” in honor of Mrs. H. T. Chiles.

Mrs. George Tyson has as her guests Mrs. W.K. Smith and little son, Billie of Dallas. Mrs. Smith is secretary of the Athletic department of Southern Methodist University of Dallas.

Mrs. Carl Johnson and two daughters and sister, Mrs. Cora Brodie, motored  to Honey Grove, Texas, Sunday, where they visited with Mr. Johnson, he having taken over the Ford agency in that city. Mrs. Johnson and daughters will be leaving soon to join Mr. Johnson and making Honey Grove their future home.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanton Carrol and children of Shreveport, La. Arrived in Caddo Sunday for a short visit with the former’s sister, Mrs. Virgil Slack and family. They left Monday accompanied by Mrs. Slack and children for Tipton, where they will visit Mrs. M. A. Cassidy, mother of Mrs. Slack and Mr. Carrol.

On last Friday night Mrs. “Bill” Owens entertained the W.W. club members at her home in honor of Miss Harriet Ray Chiles and Miss Ruth Johnson, who are leaving Caddo to take up their residence in other cities. Quite a jolly time was had by all present and the most delicious refreshments enjoyed. Each honoree received tokens of loving remembrances from W. W’s.

W.M. Society

The W.M.S. met Monday in an all day prayer service at the Methodist church with Rev. Slack leading the devotional meeting at 10am, Mrs. J.W. Smith at 1pm, and at 4pm the Juniors had charge giving a playlette directed by Mrs. Lee Hancock and Charleen Hogue. The children acted their parts well, and the program was highly appreciated by the large number in attendance.

The offering of the meeting was contributed to the Souchow school in China.

Tuesday the society held an interesting meeting at the home of Mrs. J. W. Smith with Mrs. Tom Gross as leader.

Tuesday, November 7, we met at the home of Mrs. Carl Johnson, the hostess being assisted by Mrs. G. L. Williams. Mrs. McIntosh, secretary, was absent and Mrs. Tom Gross acted in her stead. This was Mrs. McIntosh’s first time to be absent in about three years and she was greatly missed.

Mrs. Lee Hancock gave a splendid report from the Junior Society.

Mission Study Class of adults had reached the 100 per centum goal.

A box valued at $21 was sent to Wesley House at Wilberton as reported by Mrs. Tom Gross.

Parsonage committee reported that a new coal heater had been place in the parsonage.

One hundred visits were made last month.

We will have a Christmas bazaar the first Saturday in December.

Webb Withdraws from Race

Democratic Caucuses

The Democrats held their Caucuses here last Tuesday at which time delegates were elected to the county convention which convenes next Saturday March 31, at Durant.

From the east box the following were elected: G. W. Boxter, C.E. Boxter, J.E. Payne, J.L. foster, Hugh Huddleston, Frank January, Homer Freeny, L.Q. Moran, R. L. Harrison, Noah Arrington, J.M. Mitchell. and J. M. Reeves.

From the west box: John L. Boland, E. L. Pitchlynn, D.O. Nail, Tompson, A. P. Hill, E. O. VanMeter, A.P. Braudrick, J.A. Moore, S.L. Shofner, Harve McGraw, C.T. Johnson, R.L. Cochran and W.E. McIntosh.

School Election

The election Tuesday passed off quietly with only about 60 votes cast for the candidates for director and 42 on the levy. W.L. Guthrie was elected to succeed himself. There were only 3 votes cast against the 10-mill levy. This gives us 15 mills, since the state makes a levy of 5 mills regardless of what the district does.
