I've had a few emails lately asking about how I find people online. You know that much of my research for Caddo is directly from books and newspapers and photos found in the Bryan County Genealogy Library and the Indian Territory Museum. However, there is a wealth of information to be found on the web. And even though I've posted some of these links before, here is a current round-up of my favorite sites.
How I Find Dead People Online
1. Ancestry
2. Roots Web
3. Genealogy– check the forums
4. Google- web, images, books (especially helpful for old church directories and community histories)- be sure to use quotes and several versions of the name, such as “Marion L. Carter”, “Marion Carter”, “M. L. Carter” add a date or state if you get too many hits; also try “Carter family history” and “Carter genealogy”
5. Newspapers:
Searching newspapers on Ancestry.com: put the name in keyword search instead of the name box, put quotes around the name
6. Linkpendium
10. Oklahoma GenWeb Each state has a genweb site.
11. Find a Grave
12. Dead Fred
These are all on my favorites list. I also have sites for Oklahoma marriages, disasters, outlaws, and schools. I have sites for Civil War, and other specialized topics.
