Durant-Caddo Play First Game

The first football game of the season was played last Saturday afternoon between Caddo High School and Durant High School at the Durant fair grounds, and resulted in a victory for Durant by a score of 65 to 0.

The Caddo team was lighter and less experienced than their opponents, but they made a game fight against the odds.

The Durant Democrat gives our boys the following nice notice which shows that they were well behaved and hard workers:

                “The Durant back field men did some good work, breaking through Caddo’s line at will and breaking up their interference easily. Caddo’s men worked hard all the time and went down to defeat, fighting to the very last, showing that although they lost this game they are going to keep on until they are in better condition and then look out, for they have the spirit that will win. The Durant men were in better physical condition by far than the Caddo boys and their playing showed that they have had a great deal more training this year than their opponents. Caddo lacked endurance and also were very poor with their interference which accounts for the one-sided score.”

Caddo and Atoka Play a Tie Football Game

Friday afternoon at 3:30 the Caddo and Atoka football teams played a tie game on Caddo grounds, the score being 12-12. This was one of the best fought games seen on Caddo grounds in several seasons, and both teams put up a good fight. More Caddo citizens were interested in the sport; thus taking a better interest in the schools. Caddo has a good football team and we should encourage the boys. Later we shall have a good basketball team of boys and girls.

Interest in sports will lead to greater interest in the other activities of the school.

Brotherhood Play Night

Monday evening thirty men of the Wesley Brotherhood gathered to enjoy an evening of play- Dominoes, checkers, and caroms (pool) were employed and the men certainly did enjoy the evening. The entertainment committee did themselves proud in their refreshments. Ron Sargent, Scoot Hensinger and Grover Braudrick were hosts. At the meeting Feb. 15^th S.L. Shofner, T.L. McGraw and Rev. Davis will be the hosts.

The Brotherhood took definite steps toward setting out trees around the church property and appointed Tom Goss, H. B. McGraw, and Rev. Davis to look after the matter.

More money was raised for graveling the street to the church, until almost enough is raised. Work will begin as the weather permits.

John White, county agent, was a guest and delivered an inspiring talk to the men. He is a member at Durant.

New Freeny Home is One of the Finest in Bryan County

The new Freeny home on the Freeny place eight miles east of Caddo is one of the finest in all Southeastern Oklahoma.

The outer walls are of pine logs treated for termites and against weather, laid in solid concrete. Eight large rooms, with two large halls, a screened back porch and large sleeping porch, concrete cellar, are some of its advantages.

The finish is of the finest in every room, plastered walls and quartered floors. A large cedar lined closet guards against the moths and other insects that have a penchant for destroying clothes and quits and things.

The home has every modern convenience. Large fireplaces for heat, compressed gas for cooking and ice maker. Water is supplied by an overhead tank in the yard. Convenient out buildings serve as stables and a garage. Walks are of a brown native flagstone.

The home is tastefully furnished throughout with the best to be found.

This new home serves as the home of Mrs. R.C. Freeny and for R.T. Stuart and his wife, a daughter of Mrs. Freeny, who live in Oklahoma City, but who make frequent visits to the old place as Mr. Stuart has about three sections of land in that community, on which he is raising much fine stock.

The whole farm is fenced in good wire, with the best cedar posts, eight feet high.

Mr. Stuart evidences faith in this part of Bryan county by his large investment. A visit to the place is quite a treat, and these hospitable people are always glad to have visitors come to see them.

Verily, this old place "ain't what she used to be". 

Postmaster- U.S. Markham

U.S. Markham to be Caddo Postmaster

President Coolidge, through the post office department, has nominated J.S. Markham to be Caddo postmaster for the four-year term beginning January 19 past. Mr. Markham is now acting postmaster since October.

This appointment was made upon the recommendation of W. S. Pine, who had the list of eligibles before him to select from. In letters to interested people he stated that he selected Mr. Markham because of two reasons: Mr. Markham's administration since last October had been highly satisfactory to the post office department; and he stood highest on the list of eligibles as indicated by the civil service examination.

The nomination, no doubt, will be confirmed by the Senate in the due course of business.

During Roosevelt's and Taft's administrations Mrs. Markham was postmaster and gave satisfaction to the public, and since last October he has conducted the office in an admirable manner, so we have good reason to expect continued good service under his administration.

School 1915

The Caddo Public Schools began Monday with the largest attendance of record.

The Grammar School occupies the entire eight rooms at the old school building, and is crowded. The High school occupies the new school building and there is plenty of room there. There is a great need for another teacher in the grammar school but the tax levy is not sufficient to allow it, hence the best will have to be made of the circumstances.

Appropriate exercises were held at each building, quite a few patrons being in attendance; rather more than usual and the teachers start off with a fine prospect.

If our people will take the proper course in encouraging both teachers and pupils, we believe the schools will be the best yet held. The faculty is as follows:

Dr. Grassham

Dr. Grassham Died

Our town and community were shocked Sunday morning by the sudden death of one of our most valuable and respected citizens, Dr. R.H. Grassham. The doctor had been suffering form heart trouble for several months but was not considered to be in any immediate dangerous condition. He arose Sunday morning as usual about 5:30 o’clock and while dressing he became seriously ill and died within a few minutes.

Deceased was 60 years of age and had been a resident of this county for 25 years. A daughter, a brother, and two sisters survive him.

The funeral was held at the family residence Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. R. A. Schell, pastor of the Christian church of Durant; also by Caddo Lodge No. 3, of which Dr. Grassham had long been an honored member.

The funeral was attended by a large number of friends of the family. A group of classmates of Miss Lucille Grasshm from STC attended in a body. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. All places of business closed during the funeral hour.

Dr. Grassham was a high type of Christian citizen, who was highly regarded by all who knew him for his kindly ways and helpful ministration to people of all conditions of life.

H.D. Pierson was in Paris, Texas, Tuesday on business. He says that the people there are not panic stuck, but they have quit smoking cigars.

Cap Impson was here Tuesday from Bokchito with some horses to sell. He used to visit here often, but of late years comes only at long intervals.

Will Maxwell, who for a time was manager of the Moon Hotel here several years ago, was in town Saturday. He is now living in Bonham, Texas.

J.E. Derr came over from Boswell Saturday to spend Sunday with his folks. He is building the new Oil Mill there, which will be finished in about two weeks.

The business meeting of the Woman’s Missionary Society will be held with Mrs. I.S. Powell next Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. All members are urged to be present.

Riley Stevenson was in town Saturday with two bales of seed cotton on one wagon. Riley says that he’s got the idea from The Herald: with the same time and team he hauls two bales instead of one.

The Embroidery Club met with Mrs. J. H. Cossart last Wednesday afternoon with eight members and one visitor present. Six new members were enrolled. The next meeting with Mrs. W. P. Blower Wednesday, Oct. 7^th.

Mrs. W.W. Hibbard returned home last Thursday from a visit of several weeks to relatives in the East and West. While away, she visited Washington, New York, Seattle, and quite a number of other places of interest. She reports a pleasant trip.

Beds for Jury

Beds in Court House for the Use of Jurors

Walter Rambo, chairman of the board of county commissioners, stated Tuesday morning that the commissioners were preparing to place beds in the court house for the use of jurors during district court. This has always been a perplexing question for the local courts. There has never been any place to take the jury when they had to spend the night together. They have been forced to sleep in different rooms. Commissioner Rambo stated that they had purchased nice beds and coverings and that they would be placed in the large room just across the hall from the sheriff’s office, which was formerly used during the war for the exemption board. This is a large and airy room, and will make the ideal quarters. The commissioners will receive a vote of thanks from the men who have served on juries. The room will be ready for convening of the jury next week.
