Chiles’ Pig Sale
About a hundred people were out to the hog sale of H. T. Chiles last Saturday afternoon.
Nineteen pigs were sold at auction, the total bringing $195.00.
One pig was given to the person guessing the nearest to the combined weight of the twenty pigs. L.M. Towerry was the lucky man, his guess being 920, when the weight was 924.
There were bidders here form many surrounding places: Durant, Caney, Colbert, Calera, Kenefick, and Atoka. Mr. Chiles was well satisfied with the results of his sale, he not having expected to get so much for his pigs though they were worth much more.
In this lot of twenty pigs there were ten Durocs and ten Poland Chinas. The Durocs weighed 511 pounds; the Poland Chinas weighed 413 pounds combined. The litters were the same age and were of first class lineage, and each had the same feed and treatment. They were 73 days old at the time of sale.
Mr. Towerry sold his prize pig for $5, not needing him, so the entire lot brought $200.
Good livestock is the one thing that will bring this part of Oklahoma to the front. Just plain cotton, corn, and oats will not do it. More livestock, more chickens, more cows- that is the solution of our troubles.
All the politics in the world will not bring prosperity except to the man who gets the office.
Men like Chiles, Dunlap, Holmes, Guthrie, Lilley, Ira Smith, Otto Smith, and E.C. Terrell are worth more to the county than all the politicians in the state because these men are producing something worthwhile. They are building permanently on a sound foundation.
If you want prosperity to shine on you, get in the game of raising better cattle, better hogs, better chickens- but don’t try to do it all in one year. Go in to it gradually- get your feet wet slowly.
But do it!
