I love these old newspapers! I especially like the little ads and fillers that used to be spread throughout the paper:
“The neat little office of Dr. Jones, on Buffalo street, adds greatly to the appearance of the city.” (City?)
“A good boot and shoemaker could do well in Caddo.”
“The March which has just passed was the most disagreeable of any we have experienced since Sherman’s notorious “March to the Sea.”
“Caddo Lodge No. 3, Regular communications, last Tuesday in each month.”
“We are now able to add another proof to the old saying that, ‘a man never knows what he had, til he goes to move’ for in moving our office this week, we found a six-shooter which we knew nothing about before.”
“Easter has passed. You can now bid defiance to frost and plant your beans with impunity.”
“The fur trade is brisk- numerous pony loads of pole cat and other skins arrive daily.”
“J.H. Veino is erecting quite a commodious hotel near the depot.”
“Fagan’s deputies are gathering in quite a number of hemp pullers.”
“Gold in New York last week went up to 115, but has since dropped to 114.”
(obituary) “George was remarkable for his intelligence, and noble, generous heart. He won the respect and admiration of all with whom he was associated, by his high-toned manly bearing. Of all his virtues, none shone more brightly than his great regard for truth. But he is gone!- the pride of his father, and the joy of his mother. His pure spirit has flown back to the God who gave it- where, joined with the angel band, he sings his Maker’s praise.”
They just don’t write them like that anymore!
